#1a Genesis 1-11 Part of the series on the Flow of OT History
These are the four foundational events in Gen. 1-11.
THE CREATION - In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. On the sixth day, He created man and woman in His own image and gave them dominion over the earth and all living things on it (Gen. 1:1-31). God told the man (Adam), “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Gen. 2:16)
THE FALL - But the serpent deceived the woman (Eve) saying “You will not surely die for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Desiring to be independent of God, they rebelled and ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 3:1-6) ... essentially saying to God, “Stay away; I’m in-charge; No to your rules.” Thus they sinned and were banished from the garden (Gen. 3:22-24).
THE FLOOD - Sin multiplied to the point God was sad that He had created man. He sent a flood to wipe mankind from the earth except Noah and his family (Gen. 6:1-7; 7:11-13). Thereafter, God told Noah to be fruitful and fill the earth (Gen. 9:1-7). God also set the rainbow as a sign that He would never again destroy all life on earth by a flood.
THE TOWER OF BABEL - But the descendants of Noah decided to build a tower to reach to the heavens to build a name for themselves and to keep themselves from being scattered over the earth. God put a stop to their building by confusing their language so that they could not understand each other (Gen. 11:1-4). As a result, the tower was left unfinished and families scattered over all the earth in linguistic groups (Gen. 11:5-9).
